Most home network installations will use a mixture of wired and wireless.
However small home and home office networks will generally be Wi-Fi only.

Fast typically 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps
Secure and reliable.
Great for streaming HD tv services.
Permanent solution.
Eliminates WI-FI dead zones.
Wired Network Dis-Advantages
Doesn’t work with devices that don’t have an Ethernet port e.g. tablets and smart phones.
Not so easy and fast to setup as it requires running cables.
Not so easy for visitors and mobile devices (laptops) to connect to.
Main Uses
It Is best used for network backbone i.e. connecting between router, network switches and wireless access points on different levels (floors).
To summarise
In your home network connecting phones, tablets, smart TV's and laptops are the usual. The problems in using WI-FI only for your network becomes apparent when streaming HD services such as Netflix or Amazon prime etc, with its limited bandwith and limited wireless range your programmes will buffer or not load. Netflix and Amazon prime offer UHD programmes that really do suffer and with TV services heading down the network route in the near future it could be time to make a good wired connection in the rooms where you require good internet and internet based tv services.

WI-FI Extenders & Boosters
Most people have come across the problem of having WI-FI dead spots in the house and have gone online and ended up purchasing a WI-FI extender or booster. The problems with using this type of connection is the speeds will dramatically drop usually by 50% for each other booster which isn't the best if you are trying to stream video or a gamer or using zoom software etc. The other big problem each booster will have its own IP address and ssid and will need configuring to each device and wont operate seamlessly when moving around.
Mesh Networks.
A mesh network uses a couple of separate satellite nodes that replace the existing router and create a new network with different access points, these will be all the same with the same password and network name and will also seamlessly allow you to connect to the highest speed as you move around the property. Once you are on the network you can move free around the property without losing connection.
The only drawback of even a mesh system is if you have a large property or a property with very thick walls then speeds will decrease as each node repeats off another, although a lot better system than extenders.
